My son is 5 and the doctor just said he needs his tonsils and adenoids removed?

Question:
I was taking him to an ENT for continued problems with allergies that have mostly effected his eyes. I was going to have them do an allergy test so we can find out what is causing his reactions and eliminate it, since he is on 4 different medications, including a nasal spray and eyedrops. When she examined him, she said he needs his tonsils and adenoids removed and that the blood test would be easier to do while he is under for surgery.

So my son has red, itchy, draining eyes, and I find out he has to have surgery for something else. Basically I am looking for anyone with a similar experience with advice or tips. He is going in for surgery on the 3rd, and school starts (kindergarden!) on the 13th. He may miss a few days of the first week, but that isn't so bad.

Anyone with anything to make me feel better is appreciated. Thanks!

Answers:
Wow it sounds like he really needs to have them out. Mine were just taken out at 29 and it was a much longer recovery. My mom is a nurse and she explained tonsils to me this way: Tonsils and adnoids (part of the same category) were initially a part of the immune system that helps fight off infection, but they can turn on your own body and that is when they need to be removed. He will recover a lot quicker than you think and will be feeling a lot better soon.

A lot of people are on the "it's in your body leave it there" band wagon, but would you say that to someone who's appendix was about to burst or their gall bladder? Sometimes we are better off without a part of the body that is not working right. Good luck with your sons surgery. Get some pedialyte, sherbert, jello, popsicles, broth (should be cold), and any type of smoothy stuff that he wants. Stay away from fruit with seeds, they hurt. I put vitamin water or Sobe water in the freezer for an hour and it was like a slushy it just felt wonderful. Also get a heating pad and ice packs, he will probably get some ear tenderness with the nerves trying to recover. Make sure he takes it easy. Good luck. He will recover a lot faster than if he has this done as an adult. I'm going into week 3 and am just finally feeling a little better.
You need a second opinion. Please do it ASAP. God Bless!
If you don't trust what the ENT is telling you get a second opinion. You should always get a second opinion when surgery is suggested and your ENT shouldn't get offended by it.
