Liquorice is said to help, as is ginger. St. Johns Wort, Siberian ginseng, foods rich in B vitamins. Aromatherapists recommend massaging with Rosemary oil in a non smelling vegatable oil. Other herb oils include bergamot, basil, camomile, clary sage, jasmine, lavendar, neroli, nutmeg and ylang-ylang.A high carbohydrate diet also helps.
Hypnotism might be worth considering or alternatively you could get psychotherapy if your personality and life experiences are the main cause of your depression. These work well with most depressed people. Various sorts of therapy are available including problem solving or cognitive behavioural therapy with psycho analysis. best if you feel you do not understand what is causing you to be depressed.

Alternatively if you are very severely depressed electroconvulsive therapy might be best for you, particularly if you suffer from delusions. It is effective and safe and can be life saving for some people. You need to see a Doctor to talk all this through and to make arrangements you feel are most appropriate for yourself?.
Depression can perhaps be divided into two :

Endogenous or depression from within. This is a chemical disorder of the brain and really only responds to medication.

Exogenous depression of depression due to external events, though this does respond at some level to modern anti-depressants, it responds better to counselling or psychotherapy.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can be very effective. It can be more effective in the short term than traditional counselling and much more effective than drugs. You can even do it online at this website http://www.livinglifetothefull.com/elear... and it's free of charge. Of course, diet and exercise also play a major role, but CBT really gets results if you follow it properly.
