A real LIFE or DEATH situation... giving my aunt a kidney. But what do I need to know about compatibility?

Question:
testing when we live in different states? And blood tests ... does that just mean if our blood types are compatible or is it more complicated?

Answers:
Here's a link with all kinds of info about being a living donor.

Good luck!
DOCS WILL TELL YOU IF YOUR A SUITABLE DONOR
It's more than blood type.

The body uses white blood cells to distinguish between self and non-self (foreign antigens). Because you are related, your kidney may be able to transfered to your aunty...I mean there's a highly likihood than your compatible than if you were complete strangers.

Your aunty will have to take an anti-rejection steriod for the remainder of her life to supress her immune system so that her body doesn't reject the organ as foreign.
You don't worry about compatability. That is what your doctor and blood tests are for.
Yes you have to have the same blood types also the doctor will have to make sure nothing is wrong with you that could cause a threat to a very delecate procedure.
Your and/or your Aunt's doctor or hospital should have this info for you. If you want to do your own research, check out major hospital sites like the Mayo Clinic, check the your hospital's site, etc.
The Dr's will explain everything to you well in advance of the surgery.
i do think its more then that but they will let you know. all surgeries are serious and its ok though if you are going to do this would be great and that is good for you to do this if you match.
