Biopsy results?

Question:
My mom had a biopsy done a couple of weeks ago on a lymph node. The dr. who did the surgery came out afterwards and told me that he was pretty sure it was benign. I didn't ask him...he just said it. They have to freeze it for 24-48 hours then test it again, and after that they weren't as sure, so they sent it to the Mayo Clinic. She had a dr's appointment last Friday, and they said they still haven't heard back, to call back Wednesday (yesterday). She did and they said they still haven't heard from Mayo.
What does this mean? I would think if it were serious they would know right away, right? I know there's always exceptions, but usually if they take longer to get back to you is it usually less serious?
Thanks.

Answers:
theyre probably just really busy. if its really bad news, then they would call back immediatly so your mom can start treatment. you just have to be patient and wait, even though it can seem hard.
hope this helps and your mom gets better :)
You could be right but I honestly would get on their case about it taking this long. If they have not heard from them they should call. Goo Luck God Bless
A biopsy is sent to a pathologist. The specimen is prepared (frozen, sliced, dyed, etc.) and examined under a microscope. Sometimes the appearance looks like straight-forward, textbook-appearing normal tissue. Sometimes the pathologist is not sure if it is abnormal, but would like a second opinion. Often it is for medical-legal reasons that a pathologist will send out a specimen for another opinion. That is, he's pretty sure it's normal. However, if in year the patient develops a cancer, the pathologist may be held accountable on a specimen he was only 90% cconfident was normal. It is not unusual to send out pathology specimens to another institution, and the Mayo clinic is perhaps one of the busiest and most trusted. At this point, don't get too worked up over the fact that it is taking extra time to get a result back.

I hope it's all benign. Best of luck.
