OK first off I know you will get those answers that say get off your butt and exercise but they don't understand how hard that is for most obese people. your joints ache and you feel weird exercising at a gym. I think that gastric by pass is a good option. my cousin had it done 3 years ago. She weighed 350 pounds. she lost all the weight she wanted that first year post op. she went down to 135. she is now pregnant with her first child and is gaining a healthy amount of weight. the first 3 months were the hardest for her after the surgery. just the change in eating behaviors like no sugar or carbonated drinks. and no drinking fluids while eating... stuff like that. she has adjusted well. She never regrets having it done. my husband is considering the same surgery and I support him completely. if you weigh out the pro and cons the pro's out weigh the con's every time. just think if you continue to be obese you will develop diabetes, liver problems, heart problems. its a fact. and gastric by pass is the *only* cure for diabetes that is onset by obesity so I think its worth some serious thought
I have never personally had the surgery, but I would like to have the lap band surgery done instead because it is safe than the gastric bypass. The lap band surgery does not actually cut your stomach which make the surgery safer. Good luck on your discussion and I know how you feel because I am there as well.
I am not making fun, but I know two people who had it done, and the results varied.

1) first man made it through the surgery fine, but somehow fell off the operating bed and was permanently brain damaged. This is not a joke. It was horrible for his wife and children.

2) second man made it through the surgery, but hated all the baggy skin he had. Without cosmetic plastic surgery, there was nothing he could do about the skin. Also, this man was as much a foodaholic as people can be alcoholic. His behaviour did not change with the surgery. Although he ate mush unless he went out to dinner he would still load up his plate like he used to and I mean a tall pile of food on his plate, and talk on and on about how he used to eat that much. All his activities still were about eating. He might have benefited from counselling before the surgery, I don't know.

So please be sure to check out the good points and bad points of this surgery. Be sure to set yourself up with a good base of support for before, after and during the surgery. It is difficult to lose weight especially when obese. Losing weight takes forever, and I wish you well.
Try the Lapband instead. It's safer with little complication and it's adjustable. It's a gradual process so you won't get stuck with saggy skin (which is common for bypass patients). I'm friends with several people who are "banded" and they love their new lease on life. Your insurance may be able to help pay for the procedure (which is by far less invasive than bypass). The downtime is also shorter than the bypass, and the aftercare is superior to that of the bypass.
my son had it done, and they óops' poked a hole in his intestine. he had horrible pain and an irregular hearbeat, and they said it was because of the surgery. a WEEK later they sent him home, only to return that night and those doctors did an emergency 8hr surgery to clean out the infection. he had a severe case of septic shock. he nearly died twice. try the South Beach diet first. get rid off all food in your home, and then get South Beach phase one foods in your fridge, follow the diet for two weeks 9it will be miserable). even if you cheat with a cookie or two extra a day and no more, you WILL SEE RESULTS. my friend atually gained a couple of pounds during that time, but afterward the weight rolled off. she was at 350 lbs, and lost 100lbs that year. it is tough, but look what medical stuff you must continue with the first few months. if you can go through all that, then you CAN follow south beach. the safest surgery is no surgery. give diet and maybe even excersise a try for a year. ome hospitals offer fitness programs for morbidlly obese. just watch out for the one my son went to that was just a recuiting ground for bypass surgery canidates.
