Should I continue to take alka seltzer?

It is fairly easy to become dependent on antacids. The problem is this: When you take an antacid it will neutralize ALL the acid in your stomach. Actually it raises the PH. Your body will sense this and start producing more acid. So u may end up taking the antacid again. It can become a never ending circle.
I got off them altogether by drinking a lot of water or milk when I felt the heartburn. Once in a while I will revert to baking soda but that is usually when I have eaten or drank something bad or excessive.
My father was dependent on maalox and used to eat about 100 maalox tablets a week. at least
Don't forget the low (acid) ph of the stomach is there for a reason, to digest food. You body will try to keep it at a certain level and will produce an equal amount of acid for whatever antacid you take.
I used to take a lot of antacid but essentially non now. I remember sometimes I would have to sit up at night (or walk around), drink lot of H2O or milk. Once everything was settled I could get back to sleep.
Good luck
It says on the bottle to only take it for up to 2 weeks (or something like that-I don't have a bottle handy) You need to go to the doctor and have him look at you, and give you a prescription. There are certain conditions that if left untreated, can turn to Cancer. Alka-Seltzer only masks the problem, you feel better, but the cause of you not feeling well is still there, and that is a problem. Go to a Doctor and have him examine you.
My dad died of Esophageal Cancer. He had heartburn he left untreated for years. if he had gone to the doctor in the beginning, they could have helped him.
