He has brownish urine, earlier abdominal cramps, and lower back pain. Should I make my husband go to the ER?

Question:
My husband's urine has a reddish-brown hue to it the last 4 times he has urinated, which we know may mean there is blood in his urine (he is not on any meds or has eaten anything unusal to change his urine color). He also had bad abdominal cramps earlier that have since subsided. We thought the cramps were from constipation but cannot be sure. Also, he had earlier light-headedness and has lower back pain (which is not unusal for him...he has back trouble often).

These symptoms point to a possible kidney infection or stones, but he does not have a fever and is feeling better tonight than he did earlier today. He is not the type to complain about ailments, so this is all unusal.

Are there any people in the medical profession who can give us advice on whether we should go to the ER or if this can wait to see his regular doctor tomorrow?

Answers:
Omg, those hurt so bad.. I passed mine, it was like childbirth.. very painful. I just drunk a lot of water. to flush it out... GOOD LUCK.
...Sounds like your hubby has kidney stones he needs to be checked out...been through and it's painful. Could wait til the am if the pain isn't too bad
Yes, he could have blood in his urine. Possible kidney problems. It can't hurt...maybe the wait won't be too bad...Good luck!
the color of the urine is definitely not a good thing. the lower back pain could be caused by a kidniey infection, or stones. i would suggest calling your local ER and ask them if they think he should be examined right away or by his physician tomorrow. good luck.
I'm not a doc but it does sound a little like UTI. Go to your PCP asap. In the meantime drown him with 100% cranberry juice and water. Drink untill you can't fit anymore then pee a lot.
Blood in the urine is a strong indication of a kidney stone, especially if lower back pain is also a symptom, It sounds like he may be passing a stone which needs no medical intervention since he doesn't seem to be in a great deal of pain. as long as he can urinate and the pain is manageable then by all means wait to see his regular doctor tomorrow.
If he's no longer in pain, and these symptoms have subsided, he can wait until morning to see his regular doc. It sounds like he's either passed a kidney stone, or it moved from his kidneys into his bladder. If the second is the case, he may start experiencing pain again later tonight. If so, or if he starts feeling light-headed again, go to the ER. If he's passing stones, I guarentee no matter how manley he is, you'll know! I've had patients say it's worse than childbirth, and even worse in men since they have a longer urethra for the stone to go through.
Definately drag him to the doc tomorrow though!

I would see a doctor as soon as possible. Morning should be fine, but no later than tomorrow morning.
you should he can have a variety elements he can have a bladder infection or kidney stones
It sounds like a kidney stone. When the stone is moving is when there is pain. So if it is stuck or just stopped, there is minimal pain, more like a tightness in the side. Stay away from aspirin, it would thin the blood too much, stay with Tylemol or ibuprofen. You don't always get a fever from a stone, just if the the blockage is complete or there is an infection. I'd go to an urgent care that has a lab and x-rays. The doctor will ask for a urine sample, check for blood and get several x-rays. If it is a stone and your husband is not in too much pain, the doctor will recommend a urologist who will take care of it. If you go to the ER, a kidney stone is usually covered on health insurance. They'll do the x-rays etc. but you'll probably be there awhile.
I just had a kidney stone, not a great experience.
I say you take him to the ER immediately to make sure he is actually a male... these symptoms sound strangely familliar to what happens every month to FEMALES. No offense but it seems strange to me. Kidney stines..possibly. I would take my advice though if i were you.
kidney stones most likley, better see the Dr. soon, stones can be very painful!
sweetheart, your husband does not have a kidney problem. he has a sever liver problem! notice my exclamation point. its that serious. you need to fire your doctor. in the mean time get him to the hospital asap. tell them you want him checked for HEPATITIS. this is an inflamed liver. swollen and very painful.(that poor man). and ask for a biliruben test. do not take NO for an answer. this is serious. I will not go into detail here. take along a dictionary, and do your research while you're waiting for him to be diagnosed.
