Why is it so hard to donate blood in the uk?

Question:
I've been trying to donate blood for a few weeks now. I go to www.blood.co.uk and check when and where my nearest session is... there seem to only be random sessions at about 3 different locations near me, covering a few days of each month, most of which are inconvenient.

Anyway I finally found a time and place which was suitable but when I emailed them they said there weren't any appointments left!

If they want people to donate then why do they make it so difficult? When I was in Japan, each town has a blood donation centre that is used specifically for donating. You can just drop in without making an appointment, they treat you amazingly, give you lots of free stuff and it's all done really quickly. My family over there was shocked that so few people donate in the uk... it's practically unheard of for someone not to over there and nearly everyone goes at least a few times a year.

So why don't they make it easier over here??

Answers:
Same here in Ireland.. There always crying for people to donate and when you call there closed for lunch or something..They dont even open on sundays when people have a better chance of going..Its a joke..
because the NHS is hopeless!

they won't even have mine! just because I've had a tattoo in the last 12 months.
the health checks and questionnaires are necessary if a bit far fetched. But they have to try and protect patients who recieve it, of course.
I agree the sessions could be more easily accessable. It is a problem.
