Is there a treatment for people with dual diagnosis?

Question:
I know that substance abuse in itself is already hard to treat. So is mental illness. When these two combine, I imagine that it's even more difficult. Is there a treatment especially made for dual diagnosis?

Answers:
I do agree with you that just one of the illnesses co-occurring in people with dual diagnosis is hard enough to treat as it is. However, this can be treated. There is a treatment called effective integrated treatment. This kind of treatment does not only involve treating substance abuse disorder or mental illness only. The treatment involves treating both of the disorders simultaneously. Treating only one of the disorders bodes for more chances of relapse. This is why the caregiver or rehab that one must go to must be adept at handling cases like these. The treatment will most likely involve assertive outreach, counseling, motivational interventions, and social support. Constant attention must also be given to the patient to prevent relapse from occurring.
