These are called something along the lines of tonsiliths. They basically form in the "pits" of your tonsils. As everything collects, that's when it forms. There's nothing you can really do to keep it from happening. Do what your mom is telling you to do. Get warm water and salt and gargle a few times to dissolve it. It should help a lot. If it's really bothering you, consult your doctor. Good luck!

Does it hurt? If it hurts, it's an infection.
