How are Physical Therapists perceived by every day people?

Question:
Are they considered highly educated, highly paid, and good at what they do?

Answers:
Yes to all if you are referring to licensed Physical and Occupational Therapists in general. Get referrals if you are not sure.
It really depends on the person...I think the general public is starting to get the idea that this is a profession with evolving standards. It is now recognized as one of the most satisfying careers, but has a very competitive entrance.

Then there's the group of people who think that physical therapists are massage therapists or just a personal trainer...those folks are usually shocked to find out that it now requires a master's or doctorate level degree to practice in this field.

I've had many patient's tell me they came in to the clinic with the preconceived notion that PT is a "techinical" position, but have been impressed with the amount of professional judgement that goes into the evaluation and treatment.

But just like anything else...there are always a few bad apples...had a patient one time who's daughter had PT at another facility she said "I thought it was a joke...he'd give her something to do and then walk away for 10 minutes"...I'd stay away from places like this.
I think that people are aware that Physical Therapists' are very knowledgeable and are experienced in their field. I do know that they have a tough training/educational process. As with any profession, there are some that aren't as good as others. I have no idea what they are paid. I have had alot of Physical Therapy in the past and, I have not been treated by one that was incompetent or didn't know their job well. Whether they work in a hospital setting or a rehab. facility or sports medicine, they are a very important part of a person's recovery process.
some are, some are not
