Another question- What is etiology? See, if you stuck to plain English you might get a sensible reply. Hey, wait a minute, are you just showing off?
Well the etiology (the cause) , is rarely a genetic or hormonal reason which would be the most scientific explanation , although in some cases it is.
It is just a case of more food available at any time of day and for most people as frequently as they wish. More preserved food which means more sugars and salts which all contribute.
Also more emotional stress such as bullying which has increased will lead to the excuse of comfort eating.
Furthermore with the 'wonders' of technology children are finding much more enjoyment from playing on computer games than getting off their **** (pardon my french) and going outside to exercise and this all leads to a dangerous concoction that we have today.

Hope this helps.
So it is a mainly environmental cause from stress and availability and lack of quality in food.
That kids don't move enough and have access to too much processed food.
too many calories, not enough physical exertion. i think taht's what causes a lot of this ADD crap too.
Big man! Big word etiology! we are all the same here, so please refrain from the "I am" "I know" let "everyone" no your meaning in the most simplistic terms and just say "cause/causes you numpty.
Mainly environmental and behavioural factors have influenced the increase in childhood obesity. Children have a diet of processed food, high in sugars and fat. They also do very little in the form of exercise, preferring video games for entertainment and cars for transportation.
We eat to much and do far far too little. Its mainly the inactivity issue, surprisingly calorie intakes in 1900 and 1950 were higher than now, its mainly our lack of physical activity that is responsible for the problem.
