17yr step-son sprained wrist eats almost nothing while taking Vicoden and let's them dissolve in his mouth.

Question:
..or chews the pill (UGH) as opposed to swallowing the small pill. He knows quite well how to swallow a pill. He says he isn't hungry is why he just eats of few bites of this and that while on pain medication, any other time he normally eats like a horse! He doesn't seem to be sick or anything at all. The DR said it isn't that painful of a condition. I don't know much about what teens learn to do with Vicoden at school but isn't this weird & would it make him high(er) if he isn't eating much and dissolving and/or chewing them?

Answers:
Yes letting the pills dissolve or chewing them up gets the drug into the bloodstream faster and maybe therefore a better high.
I had a sprained ankle that caused the ankle to to swell up two shoe sizes and I got by on Motrin and ice packs. I think your step son is only taking the pills for the effect they have on him not on the pain. I would watch him if I were you. That is nothing to play around with.
He chews them to get the effects of the med into his bloodstream faster. I would go to the doctor and have him taken off of the Vicoden. And yes he will get high going without food and chewing the pill. I think you might need to talk to your spouse about the problem and see if they have any suggestions or input into the situation.
I'm not sure although, it does seem a little odd to me. In my day we just popped the pills. Not eating won't affect anything if he's letting the pills dissolve in his mouth. I will say that being on pain killers does seem to suppress the appetite some, so that may be what's causing him not to eat.

If you are so concerned, speak with the doctor, or just take the Vicodin away and give him Advil. Prescription pills are one of the new 'things' with kids, so you are right to be wary.
yes, chewing the pill will make it dissolve faster so he feels a "rush" a lot faster than letting it dissolve in his stomach. As far as not eating, the pill will make him more dizzy than anything, which probably contributes to the "high". They are also very physically addicting, so if you are worried that he might form a habit out of this stuff don't let him get a re-fill, escpecially for a sprained wrist- I'm even suprized they gave him something as powerful as vicodin instead of an extra strength ibuprofen!
