Question:
I tore my ACL playing soccer about 6 weeks ago. I additionaly have (supposedly) meniscus and bone injuries. I have seen two doctors, and surgery is necessary if i want to play again. I would like to know, which are the pros and cons, of al the options out there: artificial ligament, fram a donor, from my own patella or hamstring tendons, etc. Which recovers better, faster, more effective strength-wise, Less chance of breaking again. I do know my rehab will be tough, but that's not a problems. I've seen tons of soccer players have the same injury, and the recovery (if i want to play at a high level) is long, but that's no problem. Thanks for your help, and opinion
Answers:
The best (in my opinion) is ACL replacement borrowing material from your own knee. Rehab is not easy, but if followed properly you will achieve a full recovery. If you don't have cartilage damage, the pain shouldn't be too bad.
I would suggest full amputation.
i tore my ACL about a year ago playing soccer as well, and i had mine repaired from my own hamstring. i was playing soccer about 6 months after, and my surgery knee was just as strong or even stronger then my other knee. I still wear a brace when i play, but i've been able to keep up with everyone else and i feel very strong. I would highly reccomend getting it taken from your own hamstring. its a very hard recovery but if you work out alot and strengthen your knee, you will feel very strong with the end result.
good luck.
