Can i go without bandages after laparoscopic surgery?

Question:
I had my gallbladder removed 5 days ago, and i have no pain or discomfort, but my bandages are irratating me, ive tried gauze pads with surgical tape, adhesive pads and regular bandaids, but they all make me itchy and red. Can i go without them, if i wear white (so no dye gets on them)?

Answers:
Your bandaids could have come off after the second day if they were clean, with no drainage. If you notice drainage on the bandages still, keep them on for a few more days. If you have steri-strips on leave them in place. When do you follow up with your doctor? The hospital should have told you when they could be removed.
Going without some type of bandage after surgery is not a good idea. It will leave you extremely vulnerable to infection. Talk to your doctor about your sensitivity. There are products out there for people like yourself who are sensitive to adhesive material.
Absolutely. The bandages can be removed after 2 days. The incisions are essentially sealed. It takes a full 6 weeks before your scar obtains maximum strength. Avoid bathing, swimming because it can macerate the skin edges, but showering, sweating is not likely to hurt your incisions. Keep your incisions clean and dry. A daily shower is adequate. Wear whatever color you like.
