Why do people gasp when they are suddenly frightened, surprised, etc.?

I dont know but when my son was little he would cry so hard at times that he would stop breathing so I was told to flick a little bit of water on his face. When water gets flicked on the face it automatically makes you take a breath.

because you are lost for words and you want to say something like "oh my god" or "ahhhhhhhhh" but you cant
it has something to do with your pupils getting smaller and u get froze and in shock 4 a few secinds and u cab also run FAST!!!!!! ♥
