Addiction vs. habit?
Question:
My doctor discouraged hypnotism and suggested I try a new drug, Chantix.
I used it for a month and it worked like a charm, but there was one place where I really had to fight my urge, because it is where I had always smoked the heaviest.
It dawned on me that, since I was having no problems anywhere else, I was tempted to give in to a habit, not a craving or an addiction.
That's been seven months, and when I told my doctor I'd quit taking the medication, he asked, "When did you start smoking again?" And I told him I hadn't. I'm not going to go through this again.
Answers:
It does sound more like it's habit...like typical social smoking.
I also took the Chantix, which worked beautifully. The Chantix is designed to target the areas of your brain that trigger the nicotine cravings. Being that you've overcome that and the only time you desire to smoke is only when you are at this place indicates habit rather than a craving or addiction.
If possible, stay away from this place. I have found it necessary to avoid situations at times that may put me in a position to want to smoke. For that reason, I have been smoke free for 10 months. Congrats!
I through mine out the window. And never looked back.
i'm not sure what your question is, but congratulations!
Same way with me. If I don't to go outside, I won't smoke for a whole day. As soon as I get in my car, I light one up. Even when I quit, as soon as I got in my car, I would roll the window down a crack.
By the way, hypnotism would be good if you have the urge to smoke again since you have quit.
A word of advice from a former smoker.
At various times you may be tempted to light up. You might feel that you can smoke just one cigarette, or just one pack, and then quit.
Don't do it! You can quickly become addicted all over again.
Even when you have kicked your addiction, there can still be a small demon buried deep inside of you that wants you to light up. It will poo-poo the threat of addiction. It will try to make you feel you can light up "just one" and then quit once again.
One piece of evidence that the demon still lives in you: you're trying to make a false distinction between a habit, a craving, and an addiction.
THEY'RE ALL THE SAME THING.
Don't tempt fate. Don't light up. Even if you're at a party and you've had a few drinks and temptation's all around you,
don't...don't...DON'T!
