Anti-biotics..??

Question:
We've probably all had them at some time or another but if there are anti-biotics and pro-biotics - What IS a "biotic"? Why do we have them and what do they do?

Answers:
a biotic is a little otic that isn't sure if it likes male or female otics lol
I assume it is bacteria of differnet sorts - a generic term for them all.
In lay talk, if you have any infection, they wipe it out. You must always take them all, even though they work almost immediately, or else the infection will come right back. The word "biotic" means: relating to, produced by, or caused by living organisms. :)
from Fr. antibiotique (c.1889), from anti- + Gk. biotikos "fit for life." As a noun, first recorded 1941, in works of physician Selman Waksman, discoverer of streptomycin.
Originally, an antibiotic was a substance produced by one microorganism that selectively inhibits the growth of another.
When antibiotics were first discovered they were called wonder drugs.
So, anti- + biotic - destructive of life.
A biotic is something alive in your body.In this case a germ or something like that. The antibiotic kills the organism and I suppose a pro-biotic would help something to live and prosper.
