Mercury thermometers have been banned from medical use for a while. If you have one I would get rid of it.
It can kill you, or make you very sick. Sometimes it takes prolonged ingestion of mercury for it to actually kill you. It is toxic, but most times, it makes you VERY sick but you don't necessarily die.
