Can xanax cause sleep eating?

Question:
Ever since I started taking the prescription drug xanax I have been getting up in the middle of the night several nights a week to chow down on anything sweet I can find. I wake up with cereal bowls and snack wrappers all over the kitchen. My husband caught me eating toast with sugar on it one night and said he carried on a full conversation with me, but I had no recollection of it in the morning. Has this happened to anyone else? Anything I can do to prevent it? Should I talk to my doctor? It's not really hurting anything except my weight lol. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Actually, this is a relatively new phenomenon. There has been evidence to suggest that certain anti anxiety/antidepressants can cause " sleep eating". Basically, a person can be sleep walking and hungry at the same time. The person, most times, will not remember this happening or think it was just a dream. It has happened to me. As far as prevention, it would be best that you eat six small meals throughout the day, do NOT go to bed if you haven't had an evening ( not late evening) meal. It would definitely be a good idea to discuss this with your Doc ( hopefully, he/she is aware of this "new discovery"). I hope that this helps and you are NOT alone.
Yep. You got it. My wife did the same thing. It is a common side effect of that drug.
You may not be "sleep eating" it could be a blackout. Xanax is a very addictive drug and if you are not able to control your actions, then you should probably stop taking it before it gets worse.
I have taken Xanax and have never heard of anything like this. Any side effect is possible with any medication.
I would talk to your physician and see if he can put you on another medication.
you should see a doctor! don wait untill it's too late.
I am a Pharmacy Technician and have known people who have taken similar drugs to Xanax and have sleep drove!. Are you taking any other medications that could be the culprit?
Talk to your Pharmacist about the effect you are having. They can tell you if it was ever a side effect from studies done on that or any medication you also take. I do not think that these effects are very common, but I have heard of others who experience weird effects like that from drugs that cause drowsiness. Follow the Pharmacist's advice. If they do not tell you to consult your doctor and the drug is working for what it was prescribed for,you may want to ride it out to see if it is only a temporary side effect...some of them are. It may be wise to consult your doctor anyway to have them document this effect in your chart .Your doctor may change the drug if you are at all at risk for diabetes.Be sure your doctor knows of all medications you are on and who prescribed them. If I were in your shoes, I would talk to both the Pharmacist and the doctor. And I would not leave the house or drive after taking the medication. Make sure it has worn off before you leave.
