Any advice on volunteering at a hospital?

Question:
I am going to start in a few weeks and is there anything I need to be perpared for. It is a small hospital 146 beds.

Answers:
I have been working at our community hospital for nigh onto 14 years as an x-ray tech and I have always appreciated the volunteers. I would not be too concerned about gruesome stuff as most volunteers are not involved with such things but rather help out with more menial tasks such as delivering paperwork, helping visitors get from one place to another, etc. If you are working in the ER, you could come in contact with some stuff that is not too appetizing but that is the exception to the rule. Also, the young volunteers are generally kept from problem areas to keep from upsetting them as things that would not unduly upset an adult could have lasting effects on a young person. Good luck, and thank you, in advance, for your service as it will be very much appreciated. We have also had volunteers that once they saw what the medical field was all about, opted to get education that led to a medical career. I wish you the best.
Just be prepared for the ups and downs. One day you could have a completely uneventful day and the next day you could have some seriously gruesome things to deal with. Just be prepared for the worst. If you ever start to feel queasy, sit down and put your head between your legs. It'll pass quickly. Other than that, there's not much to know. Be nice to everybody, no matter how irritating they are, and you will do fine.

Hope this helps. :-)
