Why does recovery from addiction take so long?

Question:
It's just that... it takes such a short span of time for a person to get addicted to a drug. Why then does it take so long for te individual to recover?

Answers:
Recovery is a life-long process. This is because drug addiction is a chronic illness. Once a person has gotten it, there will always be a possibility of him falling into relapse. The fact that the patient will be in the outside world wherein lots of temptations can confront him is already a big reason why there are addicts who keep on having to struggle with their addiction. For those who have gotten off the drug, recovery does not just end in inpatient rehabilitation. Certain measures must be taken so that the individual won't become addicted again.
Physiological and psychological withdrawal are VERY hard to overcome.
