What does Iron and Vitamin C do to the body when they work together?

When you take an iron supplement with vitamin c (or foods/drinks containing vitamin c- like orange juice) the iron is absorbed better by your intestines.
iron (in vege's) is in the 2+ or 'ferrous' form which the body cant absorb easily. If you eat iron in veges togather with vitamin C which is ascorbic acid the acid will strip another electron (a negative 1 charge) off the iron to make it 3+ or in the 'ferric' form - which the body finds much easier to absorb. the most easily absorbed from of iron is still haem iron in meat though.
