Ways to force my bladder to empty?

That's terrible! Doctors can be stupid like that. They don't believe in growing pains either, but there are weeks when me shins hurt and at the end of the month I've frown an inch. You can try to gently but firmly press down on where your bladder is to help it get going. I hope you find a doctor that can provide better help one day.
Look up shy bladder syndrome..
There are a number of books many of which involved techniques form others who share the same problem.
It is nothing to be ashamed of, however perhaps instead of seeing an MD, you may want to book an appointment with a therapist. It is a form of anxiety.

This is actually quite common. Trying the running water thing, and maybe learn some self-hypnosis type relaxation techniques. I think that once you hear that this happens more than you realize, it might help to relieve your anxiety level and that alone should help. I went through alot of pain "holding it" because I was terrified of using a bathroom where someone could hear from another room. Like a motel room or small apartment. After some time, you'll overcome that. Meanwhile, keep telling yourself its a normal body function and EVERYONE does it. Try talking to whoever is within earshot while you are trying to go to the bathroom - it may help!
Try running warm water over your hand from the nearby faucet and relax--that might help.
try to relax and don't try to hard, if you try to hard you won't be able to void completely.
