Answers:
No,they used things such as coal oil to get rid of them
Imagine going around with a head full of coal oil? Must have smelled wonderful.
By the way, coal oil was in lamps for light before people all got hydro.
My grandma told me about this.I'm in my sixties now.
shaving, get rid of all the hair, get rid of the lice
Way back when, people would wash their hair with lye soap if they got lice. This stuff stings the scalp, can leave blisters, and is just an all around uncomfortable thing- but far less worse than having bugs crawl around I guess! Other than that, they'd have their hair cut off, which did not effectively get rid of all of the lice because lice can live without hair, they can live in eyebrows, and they will dwell in the crevices of the body (IE; behind ears) very well.
Smear olive oil on the hair and leave on for an hour. The lice are smothered, and the eggs drowned/saturated.
Cloves of raw garlic could be placed in areas where lice might linger (bed, clothing storage, etc.). Garlic juice could also be mixed with water and wiped on the skin and scalp (lice hate it, and it is also a natural insecticide).
Lye soap, correctly made, doesn't burn anything. Many soaps in stores are lye soaps. Lye soap is just normal soap, and doesn't even cause mild irritation, unless the person is allergic to it. The only way that it will burn, cause irritation, cause blisters, etc. is if too much lye is used, or something is added to it which wouldn't normally be in lye soap.
They shaved their head.
Back in the day, people would shave thier heads, or where ever else they might be.
I know when I was little, they had to either shave their head or cut their hair really short if they couldn't afford shampoos and stuff.
I am not sure what they used for Lice. But I do know what they used for ring worm. Wash your hair with tar soap and borax detergent. Then every morning and every evening moisten the area with the following solution; 1 teaspoon of golden seal, 1/2 teaspoon of myrrh; steep in a pint of boiling water.
If this doesn't work for you. I would suggest contacting one of your local holistic health care stores, such as: Sprouts Farmers Market Place. They have an herb and vitamin specialist on duty from open to close. Good luck.
Usually, they would go to their pharmacist and ask what was good for their childs treatment, and buy a lice comb and get them out that way as well as asking relatives and friends what was the best method of getting rid of them. Also had to throw away what could be thrown out that came in contact with the infested person and try to sterilize the rest.
nitpicked by hand or by using a finetooth comb. it is stiil the surest and safest method. lice infestation just does not go away. lice just continue to multiply...u have to put in a lot of efforts to get rid of it.
