Sick Notes & Sick Pay?

Question:
I have been of work for 2 weeks with severe tonsilitus. I have a sick note from my doc but I was wondering what to do with it??

Do I just give it to my boss and leave it with her or should I get it back?

Also,

Should I get sick pay? and what are the standard terms for getting sick pay.

Many thanks in advance for the help!

Answers:
Sickness is covered in your contract of employment. The standard rule is you may SSP up to 7 days, which is your self certification, however if you are more than a few days sick you should always visit your Doctor and get a sick note.
On return to work you hand this to your line manager, or personnel department with any form required by the company covering your sickness, this is then processed as your basic payment for you being off normally. You should also have an interview with your manager as to your health status as part of the Health and Safety requirements for due care of the workforce. At that time the sickness rocedure for your company should be reinforced to you and you may ask then as to what happens to your payments.
Dont forget most companies now will only pay the basic rate of salary for the time lost, not an average salary for the time.
They can not dock you any money, unless you failed to inform the company at once you was sick and could not attend work (for that you could be booked as absent).
If you are unsure of procedures, always check your personal copy of your contract.
You need to hand it to your boss.

Its around £90 per week
give it to your boss, you wont get it back but you will get paid!
Give it to your employer. It depends on the terms of your contract whether you receive Statutory Sick Pay (around £70 per week I think) or if you get paid while you are off, I get full pay for 6 months
You definately give the sick note to your boss, but this does not guarantee you sick pay from your company unless that is part of your contract. If they do not offer you sick pay then you will get Statutory Sick Pay for the time you are off.

You need to check with your employer if you are entitled to sick pay as no one here will be able to tell you that for sure. You'll get something atleast, but SSP is only about £11 a week I think.
Quit and claim beneifits
In the UK?

The sick note needs to go to your HR / payroll department in order for you to qualify for sick pay. Your boss does not need to see it but may want to. Remember to fill in the back of the sicknote. My advice - take a photo copy first as you will never see this note again!
