How can I encourage my dad to live a healthier life?

Question:
My dad is a smoker, overweight and diabetic. Earlier this year he was hospitalized with bronchitis but it hasn't seemed to phase his smoking habits. Also, he takes medication to increase insulin sensitivity but rarely checks his blood sugar.

He's a great person and works quite a bit, but just doesn't care for himself. How could I encourage him to take these matters more seriously?

Answers:
Unfortunately, when someone talks to a relative about sensitive issues, the person being talked to turns a deaf ear on what is being said. Has your Dad been to see a doctor? Would it be possible for the doctor to give him the facts, then again he might ignore the doctor as well.

It is just a fact of life that some people have made up their minds about how they are going to live their lives, and for the most part there is no way to convince them otherwise.

If you and your whole family could get together and do an intervention, that may convince him, if he'll listen. Do your homework about the facts on smoking, diabetes, and being overweight. Then present it to him with the support of your entire family.

Does your family have a dog? The next time you take the dog for a walk, invite your Dad to come along. Good luck!!
It's hard to do,but I understand.. I asked my mother to do the same thing when I was younger. She told me to mind my own business(her smoking habit). It eventually killed her about 6 years ago. Tell your dad you want him to be around for you. Smoking is a bad habit.. No one in our family smokes.. She was the onlyl one. My uncle married to my mother's sister also died years ago due to the affect of smoking. Good luck. ps. .your dad should exercise.. encourage him to walk with you. It will prolong his life if he starts soon.
Let him know that you would like to have him around for a long time. I don't know how old you are, but if this applies to you, tell him that you want him around for the important events in your life...graduation, wedding, grandchildren, etc.

If this doesn't work, ask him to sign a Living Will for his doctor to keep on file. Since he his choosing to shorten his life, let him make the decision regarding life support if needed.

That may sound cruel, but unfortunately, you may have to make that decision someday. Find out what his wishes are.
My dad did not take care of his health and we knew his wishes regarding this decision. Good luck!
