Yes over the counter pain killers can erode the lining of your stomach, which can be dangerous if that erosion causes bleeding. If you have to take OTC pain killers regularly look for entericoated which are specially coated and wont dissolve in your stomach, they break down in your small intestine which can handle it.

Well, if Any Medication eats a hole in your stomach,
then you have Ulcer problems, and they do Not go away without treatment, - and stopping the Anti-Inflamitory Meds.
If my stomach created new linings, then I would not be still babying this long time Ulcer, that flares up at certain times.
The damage is generally not permanent.
All NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen, aleve, motrin, advil, aspirin, goodies powder, excedrin, alkaseltzer, celebrex, vioxx, etc... can cause peptic ulcer disease.
