Question:
For the last 4 days, whenever I drink cold liquids, I get a quick sharp pain just to the left of my sternum which goes away after a second or two. This only happens when I drink cold liquids though. That's pretty much the only symptom I have, but it's totally not normal for me. My father's a paramedic and I asked him his thoughts and his immediate response it could be a possible hiatal hernia, but I have no other symptoms. No burping or anything like that either. There have been no immediate injuries or anything strenuous that could've caused this. I don't want to go to the doctor just yet if it's nothing big. However, I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas or has heard of this before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Answers:
. You might want to read the Mayo Clinic site. There are a lot of possibilities.
The AMA site says: "...Normal persons often note chest or back pain during rapid ingestion of cold liquids, commonly believed to result from cold-induced "spasm" of esophageal muscle."
Even YahooHealth has some info: "...The cause of esophageal spasm is unknown. Many doctors believe it results from a disruption of the nerve activity that coordinates the swallowing action of the esophagus. In some people, very hot or very cold foods may trigger an episode. .
