Anyone suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, and does it affect your life?

Question:
i have had it 7 years now, and since i have been on peppermint tablets 3 years ago it has been alot better, but before that and even now i cannot do alot of things. i have to make sure i have been to the loo before i go out in a morning,i have to make sure i eat regular. all little things like that is the reason i can only work in the evening because i am on and off with pain. i have to make sure am out of bed 2 hour before i go out to make sure am not going to be in pain when am out. i am ok in the evening its the morning and during the day it is worse. i was just wondering if anyone else has the same problem,as i no other people who have ibs,and they seem to be ok,and doesnt seem to affect there every day to day life. i just wish i could get up in a morning and have a normal day like most of my friends. it really gets me down at times.

Answers:
i suffer the same hunny, and its awful. i suffer the sweats and tummy cramps from hell. it affects my life a lot. it limits what foods i can eat,and i swell up like a beach ball. like you i have to get up a bit earlier so i can make sure i have been before i have to start looking after the kids.
try drinking extra water and having some deflatine. it eases all the trapped wind that ibs sufferer's sometimes have to deal with. its such an unforgiving medical condition. i have to avoid all types of fibre, and sometimes fruit. i suffer both with not being able to go ,and going to much. i would have a talk with your gp to see if there is anything he can give you to ease your pain. my heart goes out to you,as i konw exactly how you feel. hope things work out for you. warmest regards xxx
I am quite certain it is distressing for you. And yest IBS does affect your life socially and mentally. You have to plan your life around your disease.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder characterized most commonly by cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. IBS causes a great deal of discomfort and distress, but it does not permanently harm the intestines and does not lead to a serious disease, such as cancer. Most people can control their symptoms with diet, stress management, and prescribed medications. For some people, however, IBS can be disabling. They may be unable to work, attend social events, or even travel short distances. Unfortunately, there is little to be done to alleviate this condition.

Continue on as you are and occasionally check with your doctors to see if there is something new that can help you. Good luck

its not being able to eat properly that gets me too as mine is coeliac disease and there is so much i cant eat and i have to watch everything
I have IBS and have had it now for twelve years, the first four years was the worst, i was being treated by my doctor and local hospital as it was that bad i could not go out the house they all put it down to stress why it was so bad, from the time i got up in a morning to the time i went to bed i would have bad cramp pain and would spend hours on the loo, life was so awful, but life for me changed after i went and saw a hypnotist,8 years ago on the recommendation of the hospital doctor. I had five sessions with him, i like you have to still have pills and still get the odd really baday but nothing like i was,the hypnotist did me a tape that i play if i am stressed which is very calming.try it and see if it works for you, good luck

Be very careful to keep an eye on this condition-my Mum had IBS for many years or so we thought/she was told by her GP,it at some point developed into Bowel Cancer and was completely missed by the GP because it's symptoms were so similar.
Don't want to scare you or anything but If one person can benefit from my warning it will be worth the time & effort to warn you-My Mum died last month of her condition due to it being too far advanced for treatment.
