Hi, I have suffered with severe insomnia for years, since a little girl. Why my mother didn't refer me to a doctor I'll never know! I've had a thyroid blood test because my mother has thyroid probs, it came back 2.53, the doc says that is normal. To help me sleep I've trid everything inc. excercise, 5-HTP (made me depressed), L-Tryptophan (made me very sick), Melatonin (sent me wierd), a mixture of Hops, passiflora, valerian, avena etc (was OK but not great), St John's Wort (was brilliant for 4 months then started waking up for a few hours). Now I've resorted to Unisom (2 weeks now), I take 1/4 with no side effects, it works great and I am very happy with the result but not happy that it isn't natural. It says on the box use for 2 weeks but if I don't use it, I will not sleep. With these I get a good 9-10 hours of bliss and wake refreshed. Should I be concerned taking 1/4 every night or is there any other natural magical out there. Do these tabs suppress the adrenals.

I have insomnia, and I take Unisom; I think that it works great! I take a whole pill almost everynight. I also take melatonin, and that helps me. When you took Melatonin were you taking 6mg? That's what I take, and it works with the Unisom, to get me tired and feel ready for bed, but not actually sleep, so the Unisom gets me to sleep.
unisom is an antihistamine. a sedating antihstamine. before, it was classified as an over-the-counter drug that is why it is safe to use. nothing to worry about.
The dosage you mentioned does not usually bring about serious side effects. A similar med is hydroxyzine(vistaril,atarax).
*Do not watch movies right before you go to sleep.
*Do not read or eat on the bed.
*Make a fixed plan for your sleep: when to sleep and when to wake up.
*Do not eat much fatty or spicy food.
*Do not drink alcohol or coffee at night.
*Do not smoke cigarettes.
*Try to smile and laugh more!
