Answers:
I sometimes get ingrown toenails. Usually I can just go to the nail salon and they can cut out the ingrown part for me with cuticle nippers and it feels a lot better. So you could do that if you don't wanna go to the doctor. It's actually a less drastic method of solving your problem. If you're a guy, it's still ok to go to the nail salon. I've seen guys there before and I can tell they are not gay. They go just to get their nails trimmed and cleaned up but don't get nail polish.

If your toenail gets infected or the ingrown part is toward the back of the toe, you should go to the doctor weather you want to or not. That's what happened to me a few months ago. It was really painful and the ingrown part was too deep and too far back to get it fixed at the nail salon. I had to go to the doctor. The doctor numbed my toe and actually sliced out the entire side of my toenail. Sounds painful but I felt much better afterwards because I no longer had a toenail poking into my skin. Just keep in mind, that it takes a couple weeks for it to completely heal if they do it this way. There is also a small posibility that your toenail may not grow back properly. Personally, mine looks like its gonna be fine. It's grown back for the most part but its taking a long time.

Supposedly, they say you can help prevent ingrown toenails by cutting them straight across.
Soaking in Epsom salts will help, but you need to trim the nails correctly to avoid the ingrown. Always cut straight across and NOT down the sides. Also, if you'd like to relieve the pressure on the side now, cut a "v" in the middle of your toenail. This will take the pressure off the side of your nail and allow the nail to grow without growing into the side of your toe.

If you were to have an ingrown nail, you would know it. It is VERY painful.

Soak your toe for about twenty minutes in the Epsom salts and semi-hot water. Then trim your "v" in your nail. It will hurt less.
yes they can be nasty, yes soak your foot in a tub of hot water & epson salts, for about an hour, let the nail get really soft, then try bending it upwards if you can & the trim it, believe me, it will get painfull if you let it go, good luck, hope I was of help.
Ouch. Those hurt. I have one on both of my big toes. Here's what I do: right after you get out of the shower have your clippers open and ready and get a metal nail file that has a point on it to clean under your nails and lift up the part of your nail that's ingrown and cut it. Sounds gross, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Either that or get it sergically removed. (Which usually it'll come back anyways.)
