My mother thinks it's okay to go through a red light....?

Question:
Today I was going to lunch with my mother and I couldn't believe it. She turned left on a red light because she didn't want to wait for the turn signal. The traffic was clear at that point but still the car coming towards the intersection blared his horn to let her know she was in the wrong.obviously. But Mom thought there wasn't any problem since she didn't see any cops around. Then she was going 80 kmh down the hill and I had to remind her that the speed limit was 50 kmh. My daughter was with us and she just finished driver's ed. This wasn't setting a very good example. My mother is 70...is this a warning to something more.health-wise?

Answers:
My grand maw has frontotemporal dementia. Decreased judgment is one symptom. Northwestern has a good article about it on there site.
MY SiS D0ES THAT T00. THATS 0K BUT D0NT LET THE PO PO SEE Y0
It is a warning that your mother shouldn't be driving. She obviously thinks she is above the law, and that is the kind of person that ends up killing other people on the road!
you're right... it's a violation of the law
I have 2 friends who do that! They both say if a light's red, it's legal to make a left if no one's coming. I don't know why people think it's OK!
It could be if she hasn't behaved this way before, and I am assuming you have ridden with her before so you would know. I would discreetly call her doctor and tell the doctor what you have just told us here.

By the way, you are correct, this is wrong. Saying it's okay because the police weren't there is tantamount to saying that any other crime the police don't see is also okay. What's next? Shoplifting is okay if you don't get caught? As I suggested above, call her physician. This could be a sign of some sort of health issue especially if these behaviors are out of character for her.
Turn your mom in if you don't want her to kill herself or possibly someone else. With an attitude like she has she is a hazard to everyone on the road and should not be driving. If she keeps this up she is going to get killed unless you say something to the police to stop her.
Wow, you need to give your mom a serious wake up call. She is endangering you your child, pedestrians and others in traffic. She should not be allowed to drive, she is to dangerous!
For the sake of yourself and your child don't get in the car with her again most accidents are cause by inpatient drivers trying to get every way as quick as possible, I have lost count of how many times I have been over taken when doing 60mph or just under on a 60mph road its just madness. tell your mum you think her driving is dangerous and why. the laws are there for a reason.
This is very alarming! definitely a warning.
She's not setting a very good example for you. Maybe you could politely suggest that she get another examination, I mean you don't want her getting in an accident. SHE'S MADE IT TO 70, why not go for 90? 100?
Absolutely! She's not being rational, so you should provide the information to her doctor and get her there for an appointment.

Also, under no circumstances should you or your daughter ride with her again until the doctor has been involved and you can guarantee you'll be safe.
I would ask her to get checked for Alzheimer's or something! That would scare me....
Did she stop first? LOL No really did she stop first. The point is not there were no cops around the point is she broke the law in more ways than one with u and your daughter in the car with her so she obviously drives like this more often than not. It is time for you and your siblings if u have any to go and visit mom and have a chat with her about her driving habits. Mayb go with her to her next dr. appointment and talk with her physician about her well being, and everybody else's that is on the road when she is
Behavior like this can be a warning that something else is going on with her, health wise. It is a lack of judgment and rational behavior.

My mom started doing things like this when she was getting Alzheimer's.

Keep an eye on her behavior in other areas, and definitely do not let her drive if you can help it.
you can make a left hand turn on red if the street is a one way and the one way direction is to the left, going 80 in a 50 have her glasses checked
You said you were going 80 km/h...was this in England? The English drive on the LEFT side of the street...could be your the loony bin.
You might remind your mother that she has you and her granddaughter in the car and her bad driving habits could get both of you killed.

Ask her if she could live with the memory of killing her granddaughter just because she became impatient at a red light.

As far as speeding down a hill. Maybe she wasn't aware that her foot was on the gas peddle or possibly she has trouble seeing the speedometer.
Elderly peoples senses aren't as sharp as they were when they were younger. On top of that your mother might not realize the severity of running a red light in certain situations.
