How do you get rid of lice?

Question:
My sister has it and it's driving her crazy.

Answers:
Any of the previous shampoos mentioned will work. You can also buy spray to spray the things that can't be washed. Like the carpet. Boil all hair brushes and combs. Clean all bedding. Put all stuffed animals, pillows, dolls with hair or anything that can't be washed in a plastic bag and spray with the lice spray. Store away for a while. As far as choices of cleaner friends as mentioned in another response, lice are not caused by filth. They come from woody areas and anyone can get them. Even if you shampoo every day. They do not fly but are transferred from person to person via clothing, hairbrushes or hats. There is also a lice preventive spray on the market but I'm not sure how well it works. I have heard that rinsing your hair in vinegar water will help repel them. I have been through several bouts with my daughter when she was younger and also with my granddaughter. Even though they have had them, I have not. I attribute this to the fact that I color my hair because now that my daughter is older and colors her hair, she no longer has a problem even though her daughter has. After treating your hair you may have to pull out nits with your finger nails. Some may come out with the combs but check carefully. You also may want to treat your hair again in 7 days and again in another 7 days in case a nit was missed and hatched. Most importantly, tell you sister to not let anyone make her feel like she is dirty because as I said it has nothing to do with dirt.
Use Rid. you can get it at like duane read, rite aid, or CVS one of those pharmeceutical stores. just follow the directions on the bottle. it helped me alott!! and if you do use this, if your sister is younger, make sure that you have her distracted while whoever is getting rid of the lice is doing that, because if she's watching TV or something then she'll be less likely to worry. hope this helps!
They have over the counter medication such as Rid. But you can also visit your doctor for a prescription.
Go to your local drugstore and buy Nix. Its a time consuming process, but it worked for me when I was a little kid. Tell your sister to be super careful about sharing hairbrushes and things of that nature. Also, have her wash all of her clothes, bedding, towels, stuffed animals, etc. the lice can get on that stuff too!
Rid. There are also other steps to keep it from coming back. YOu need to wash ALL Bedding, including pillows in HOT water. Include your hair items to.Then soak all your combs, baretts and brushes in bleach. Then tell your sister to stop sharing things with her friends and find some cleaner people to hang out with.
As was stated Rid is the best of the over the counter remedies. If it doesn't work you need to get an Rx from a doctor. Also, wash all clothing, bed clothes and anything she has been in contact with. Hot water and strong detergent. You will also need a nit comb. This is a fine toothed metal comb to get any lice eggs out of her hair. Thoroughly spay your house. Good luck
I had them once when I was about 10 yrs old. Back in 1950.
Lice killing meds were limited back then and it was about a week's work for my mother. I had to wear eye protection and the nits had to be removed and discarded by hand as the medication would only kill the live ones.

I hope your sister gets rid of them quick. Does she know where she got them. Mine were transferred to me from the boy who sat in front of me in school. He was taken out of school and got cleaned up so we never had trouble again. But if someone is bringing them in you can get re-infested. Good idea to tell your school or day care about it.

If I ever got them again, I would shave my head in two seconds..easy for a boy to say, hard for a girl

If I got body lice I would head for a cattle ranch and swim through that trough with the cows.LOL

Very good advice from Deb and Peppy below
get a special lice shampoo and then use it according to the directions. Comb the eggs out afterwards using a lice comb.

Wash all sheets and blankets and anywhere that lice could hide. Use hot water, then put them in the dryer on hot. Anything that cannot be washed like that should be sealed in a plastic garbage bag for a minimum of two weeks.

Everyone in the household should was their heir using the shampoo, as it protects from re-infestation.
I am a professional nitpicker in NY.
Here is what I would recommend:
Please don't spend too much time on cleaning and vaccuming furniture. Just clean hair brushes/ other head gear, pillow case and bed sheets.
Use chemical free treatment to kill lice- Licefreee is good.
Then buy a finetooth metal comb (licender, licemeister, terminator).
Smother hair with a thick conditioner (pantene).
Comb out each family member everyday for the next 3 days.
An average comb out would last about 2 hours.
So, be ready for it and get other family members to help out.
Also watch a video about the comb out- www.headlice.org.
Just so you know, they are professional nitpickers who help out if it gets to be too overwhelming. Checkout www.licesolution.org (under 'go local') to see the listing in your area.
Good luck!
