What can I do about blocked ears due to a cold?

Question:
I have a cold and it's almost gone but I've got blocked ears at the moment. I really want to know how to unblock them. I have a school production to perform in tonight so I'd really like them unblocked soon. Is there anything I can do at home to unblock them without having to go to the chemist? Thanks.

Answers:
I just suffered though this condition myself, and I also tend to prefer non-checmical solutions when possible. My doctor suggested hot showers and/or leaning over a steaming bowl of water with a towel over my head (the steam helps to increase moisture in the passageways to encourage movement of fluid) and to drink lots of water (also to increase hydration). The steaming (in shower and out) did help to loosen the blockage and get it moving, but it took about a month before it went away completely.

If you need it gone sooner, you may need to see the chemist. My dcotor indicated that some steroids can be used to clear it up. You may also want to check with your doctor (if you haven't already) just to be sure there is no infection and that the problem really is the build up of fluid behind your eardrum.
