Occy health checks before becoming a nurse?

Question:
I have osteoarthritis in my shoulder will it stop me becoming a nurse?

Answers:
It all depends on whether it is debilitating and prevents you from having a wide range of movement. There is a lot of manual handling involved in nursing and they do not want to risk you having pain or further injury through straining yourself. When I had my occy health check they checked a basic level of movement in arms and legs and it was quite gentle. You should be fine, just be honest about it and tell them if you are on any medication.
Only if it keeps you from doing your job properly. Nurses are people just like the rest of us; it's not like they're not allowed to have any medical problems.
Definately not.
Good luck with school!!
It shouldn't stop you from becoming a nurse, but you may have to modify the way you provide patient care. With O.A. you should not do any lifting of the patient by yourself. You may have to change what hand you choose as dominate if you are having pain that day.

By all means, complete your nursing education. We need you out here!
