What are the causes of near-sightedness?

Near or far sightedness is brought about by an image focused behind (far sighted) or in front (near sighted) of our retina. There are several causes for these condition. Most common is genetics. Our genes determine the shape of our eyeballs. Some eyeballs elongate/flatten out. This would then cause the lens in our eyes to mis-focus images we see.
