Why you can't kill yourself by holding your breathing?

Thanks for asking,
To start with, let me tell you that, breathing is not a voluntary action. It is controlled by the autonomic nervous system of our body.(The same that controls your heart and blood vessel functions)

Normally, a healthy person can hold his/ her breath for 40-50 seconds. It may vary depends on the training and the physic. If, you do not breath, there will be a great alteration of the gases(oxygen concentration will get lower and the carbon dioxide will get increased) level in the blood, causing the brain stem(part of brain) to send the "reflex" down to the breathing muscle to initiate breath. So, don`t have the choice. This normally happens when, you hold your breath.
So, it is not in your hand. It`s all the trick from the autonomic nervous system of your brain.
you can hold your breath til you pass out but when you pass out your gonna start breathing again, all your gonna get is a headache
