Should I be able to taste the medicine I place in my ear?

Given that your ears and nose are both connected to the eustachian tube I'd have to say yes. These tubes allow the fluids (mucus) to drain from your nose and ears. So, by putting the ear drops in, it's more than likely draining into the bak of your throat and giving you the sensation of tasting the medicine. As far as the drops causing discomfort. Is the discomfort in your ear of is it making your throat sore? I'd mention it to your doctor and see what his/her opinion is.
I too have had ear problems all my life, but nothing near what you have had. I have tasted ear drops after putting them in my ear, but I didn't think anything of it. I figured it's just like when you choke on water in a pool and it burns in your nose. All of the tubes for your ears, nose and throat are connected, that's why "yucky" things happen when you have a cold. Now, for the discomfort, I have never enjoyed having drops in my ears. It was always uncomfortable for me, but if it's unusual for you, I would mention it to your doctor at your next visit. And if you're worried, it never hurts to call and talk to the office nurse about your concerns. Then, if it is something weird, she can bring you in to see the doctor.
Since your eustacian tubes run from your eardrum to the back of our throat, yes. you ARE going to taste medicines and other drops you put in your ears. You probably have a clogged tube, which could be why only one ear is causing the taste. as for discomfort, you'd better as your doc. they'd rather answer questions to prevent adverse reactions than treat them.
