R.don't use it if you don't have to...rest it
Ice.20 minutes on, 20 minutes off...repeat a few times.
Compression...one of the elastic bandages and wrap it up for support
Elevation, sit and prop it up on the furniture.
:^)
rest means don't put weight on it. ice is pretty obvious, put some ice on it. compression means keep pressure on the wound, and elevation means keep it above your heart level (so lay down and prop your leg up or something)
rest your leg, don't use it much.
put an ice pack on your leg.
put pressure on your leg, with your hands, don't stand on it.
elevate your leg,put it on a chair or bed.
Rest is self explanatory. Try to stay off your leg.
Ice is just that, too. Apply ice to the injury for about 20 minutes each hour.
Compression refers to an ace bandage applied to the injury to help decrease the swelling. Putting pressure over the injury discourages the collection of lymph that is part of the body's response to injury.
Elevation means to get your leg up, on pillows, in a recliner, as raising the injured leg helps to decrease swelling as well.
RICE is used for treatment of sprains i.e. ankle injuries, although it is a little controversial now and there is little evidence to support the I and C. The R is also under debate as there is good evidence to say the sooner you mobilise after an injury the less scar tissue develops, and the sooner you joint recovers so...
Rest: In the acute phase (the first 24 - 72 hours) or while really painful try to avoid using the affected limb as much as possible. After this begin to mobilise gently.
Ice: Icing the injury for short periods (5 minutes) every 30 minutes for the first 24 hours.
Compression: a compression bandage that goes from the joint above to the joint below the injured area...
Elevation: above the level of the heart to reduce swelling and pain.
