I was hunting and tryed to jump over a spiked fence...my calf was caught in it...one of the spikes cut into my skin some what deep! I put alcohol on it and been taking penicillin pills since yesterday.will that be enough? Or do i need the shot?

Answers:
you need a tetanus every five to tens years, but for any new puncture, laceration type wound you will need a booster, also please keep the area clean with soap and water so you don't risk infection, so please get the shot its not worth taking chances
if u havent had a shot in the last 10 yrs then u need another one-
where did you get penicillin pills?
Here's what I think. Your risk of getting tetanus from this injury is small. BUT, tetanus is a HORRIBLE disease. Why take any risk?

Now for the official Red Book (the pediatrician's bible on immunizations) recommendation: if you sustain a deep, dirty wound and more than five years have elapsed since your last tetanus booster, get another.

It may be more appropriate for you to get the newer TdaP vaccine, boosting your immunity to diphtheria and whooping cough as well. Ask your doctor about this.
