Why do some people make fun of people that are mentally impared?

When some people don't have an open mind because of the way they were brought up or peer pressure or whatever the case may be, they tend to make fun of what they do not understand. They didn't grow up with the phrase "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all". Or like others have said, because they want to feel better about themselves. A lot of the time it is fear of the unknown, it is easier to handle to make light of something but it this case make fun of. My brother was born with downs syndrome, he will be a year old in October and I already see people give the funny looks and whisper. Some people just don't have the ability or patience to stop and think. It is human nature to be naive about one thing or another. And if you look around, a lot of those who "make fun of" do it because of their own insecurities and they do it to anyone not just those with a mental problem.
It is sad really. Too bad for them.
They are jerks and feel like they have to make fun of others in order to feel better about themselves.

Actually, they're not making fun. They are competing as to who is really retarded and, funny thing, they always end up winning.
because they are idiots who have no respect or compassion for those born with problems. They were obviously not raised right or didn't have the back of their head smacked when they did it. The people that laugh or don't say anything are just as idiotic.
to make fun of someone WHO has a mental illness, takes lots of thought . (kidding) i have worked in this Field for 12 years now and i see and hear it all the time. And i love to make them look stupid and foolish. The people i work with are kind and some even have BA. They just fell on some rough times and never fully recovered. Its people who think they know everything who make the most jokes and look the stupidest
