Hi Shingles is an outbreak caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. Often this will lay domant in the body for many years and then re-accur as shingles and can be very painful and upsetting. Doctors think stess and a reduced immune system can cause this. Some other doctors are not sure. But if you have shingles, or know someone that does, please have them see their doctor to get the latest and best treatment for this. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie.
Hi...basically in a nutshell is a reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, a type of herpes virus that causes chickenpox. Once you have had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in your nerve roots and remains inactive until, in some people, it flares up again. When the virus becomes active again, you develop shingles instead of chickenpox.

You may first experience a headache, flu-like symptoms (usually without a fever), and sensitivity to light, followed by itching, tingling, or even severe pain in the area where a rash occurs.

There is no cure for shingles, but treatment may shorten the length of illness and prevent complications. Treatment options include:

Antiviral medications, sometimes in combination with corticosteroids, to reduce the pain and duration of shingles.
Pain medications, antidepressants, and topical creams to relieve long-term pain.

You may reduce the duration and pain of shingles by:

Taking good care of skin sores, such as not scratching blisters and keeping your skin clean.
Using medications as prescribed to treat shingles or postherpetic neuralgia, which is pain that lasts for at least 30 days after the shingles rash heals.
Using nonprescription pain medications, such as acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen, to help reduce pain during an attack of shingles or ongoing pain caused by postherpetic neuralgia.
If home treatment does not reduce postherpetic neuralgia pain, talk with your health professional about what you can do to control the pain.

Hope this helps!
Shingles is a rash caused by the same virus that causes Chicken Pox-- Viricella zoster. It lives in the nerves and never fully goes away. It can be brought on by emotional stress or a weakened immune system
Shingles are caused by VZV, Varicella Zoster Virus, the same virus thet causes chickenpox. Once you have chickenpox, the virus can lie dormant in nerve cells for years. They get reactivated when your immune system is weakened for any reason such as AIDS, or cancer therapy.
Shingles always occur along the area supplied by the affected nerves and can be quite painful.
Shingles are a viral disease kin to chicken pox. The medical term is herpes zoster. Don't freek. It is not the bad kind of herpes. It usually appears when you have been sick and your immune system is low. Something else that I think is important to know. If you had chicken pox as a child you can still have them but you can't catch them from someone else who has them. If you never had chicken pox you can catch them from someone who has them. The bad news is that they are extremely painful, the good news is, that in the last few years, medical science has developed drugs that help cure them. A few years ago, all they could give you were pain pill and you had to wait it out. I hope this answers your question.
