Trouble falling a sleep, sleep paralysis, and panic attacks?

Question:
I have been having trouble with my sleep for the past two years. I can't fall asleep and when I do sleep paralysis kicks in. It has recently been worse then ever. Plus I have been getting what I think are panic attacks in the mornings. After I wake up I get this feeling, my heart will be racing, I feel like I am choking, and I basically feel like I am dying. Do you think a doctor could help me with my problem? Is it worth asking at my next appointment?

Answers:
Hi, sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. Yes, I would suggest you speak to your doctor. In the meantime, the following steps should eliminate (or at least significantly reduce) your panic attacks and help you sleep better:

1.Breathe properly - if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.

2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks, OCD and anxiety etc. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can speak to your doctor about taking a course or you can take a course for free online at: www.livinglifetothefull.com

3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough - especially at night. You can get free downloads online, e.g. http://www.studentservices.utas.edu.au/c...

With each step practise makes perfect. (i.e. practise the steps every day, not just when you are feeling bad). I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck!
YES!! You must ask your doctor about it!! I can help you with sleep and anxiety. For falling asleep Ambien CR, Lunesta, or Rezerem. For anxiety and sleeping, Elavil and Klonopin. I have spent over 20 years researching what I'm telling you. But I don't know about the paralysis. It might just be anxiety. If so, then Elavil and Klonopin will fix you right up. Print this out, and show it to your doctor. Don't leave anything out. Make an appt. on Monday. :)
Do NOT take sleeping pills. They may appear to help at first, but in the end they will be counterproductive.

I experience sleep paralysis every once in a while too. It is something I look forward to. I love the vivid dreams, and often use it to discover new things about myself.

Though I've never been afraid of it, many people have. If you begin to experience it, try wiggling a limb, such as a toe or a finger, and remind yourself that your body is just trying to protect you.

Do you remember your dreams? Start a dream journal and learn to analyze them. Write whatever your remember. Even the most simple symbols can reveal a lot about what could be troubling you in the unconscience mind.

Sit back for a moment and think.

Are you stressed? Are you eating properly? Have you been moving around a lot? Are you sick?

I would say, yes, ask a doctor about the stress in the morning, but do not accept pills to put you to sleep. If you are having sleep paralysis, pills won't get rid of that anyway.

If you are having trouble falling asleep, get up and walk around. Turn on a dim light and read a book. Play some gameboy. Do something to entertain yourself instead of wasteing time laying in bed. After ten minutes to a half hour, go back to bed and try once more to fall asleep. Repeat as often as needed.

I hope that you can discover the underlying cause with all of your troubles and get better.
