How do you adjust your body to sleep days and stay awake all night..Nurse needing help?
Question:
Answers:
the nurses i work with take a nap before their shift. that seems to help. you work, go home and sleep during the day for about 6-8 hours and then wake up and do normal stuff and go to work.
gradually adjust your sleeping habits until you begin to sleep during the day. but do it gradually
My dh works graveyards, and when he switched to that schedule he took a day off so he had a long weekend and then just made himself stay up that night as long as he could and did the same thing the next two nights, and each night he was able to stay up a few hours later. It kicks your butt for awhile and you will need naps for a bit, but you can do it!
You'll adjust in about a week or two. I liked the 12 hour shifts. The hardest part was coming in for the darn meetings they always held during the day, and then coming back in at night. Don't over do the coffee.
dark room, phone ringer shut off, answering machine on. get some melatoninin (sp?) and take it just before you go to bed. an air force study found that for every hour that you change your sleep cycle it takes the body a day to adjust. I have found that keeping a fan running in the room helps block out background noises.
First cut out all caffeine, day and night and then when you want to sleep, turn off the alarm, phone and TV, close all blinds--darken room as much as possible, cool room off as much as possible and use white noise to block all other annoying noises, then lay down and take a Benedryl and drift off to a peaceful sleep, get at least 8 hours after your shift.
