Is it really unsafe to insert a cotton-tipped ear swab through the ear waterway?

It feels characteristics of uncomfortable and itchy inside the ears when ear wax builds up, so I hold frequently used ear swabs to remove some of them. I have also used them to remove wax on the outer side of my ear and for putting on makeup.
My family connections and I haven't use them for a while, so I finally tried to buy them today until I saw on the box, which cautioned not to insert them through them through the ear strait.
Why is it so?

Answers:    You should never ever insert a swab into your ear. You could puncture your eardrum or shove the wax in farther. The ears are self cleaning and as investigational wax is made it pushes the old wax out so you can wipe it away next to a washcloth. If it does build up and needs to be removed enjoy someone flush your ears but NEVER EVER use a q-tip.
IF it is inserted too deep into the ear waterway, you could injure and damage the particular parts of your ear - i.e. puncture the ear drum. And believe you me, it HURTS
