What's with all these people that claim to have OCD? Has it become the fad disease to have?
Question:
Answers:
The disease is not a fad, it is just a fad to have it on tv shows. This has (of course) an up side and a down side. It is great that people are learning about a disorder that can have major social implications for the OCD patient, maybe someone will have more tolerance. The down side is that the exposure can trivialize what can be a very serious disorder. A lot of people do have OCD habits, but if those habits interfere with daily life a diagnosis should be made and treatment sought. And, yes, I have been diagnosed with OCD, and it is getting much better, thank you very much.

probably because it was on tv .but i wouldnt know because i've never heard of that show , but they probably think its cool to have .but its not
Simple fact is doctors what to make more money, and people what to have a scapegoat for their behavior. No One in todays socity wants to take ownership of thier own lives. Yeah, not only that, ever since MTV aired the OCD special, people think its kool to have OCD
Fad disease,lke ADD.

A person is truly OCD if their behavior effects their life. But everyone has little eccentricities. When they see an episode of Monk they start to recognize the relationship between his eccentricities and theirs. So, they're "Monkish". It's not new, not even really a fad. Just an observation of behaviors they wouldn't have thought twice about before. you are all being a little ignorant in my opinion. Who are you to assume someone is lying about having OCD? Do you have a psychology degree? Did you go through 6 hears of college learning about the human brain?
Let's look at this from a different prospective shall we?
Years ago if someone said they were gay (I'm not saying this is a disease.just an example to prove my point) they would be considered some sort of contagious plague. Nobody wanted to accept that you could not help being gay and it would not affect anyone else. Now homosexuals are "everywhere" so to speak. does this "coming out" consist of some TV trend? Or are these people just becoming more confident that society is ready to accept them? A few years ago OCD had sort of the same impact on society. we didn't know what it was so we pretty much shunned it from our circle in society. Now we know what it is and we are ready to accept it. People who have this disease are becoming more confident with society's reaction to their disease so they are starting to "come out". This is not some mass TV trend. Some people amaze me with their ignorance. OCD is not a disease. It's a behavioral disorder. People with OCD behave in a certain way to calm their obsessions. There is nothing fad about it. For those who have it as an extreme it is very debilitating and a very serious disorder. OCD is usually caused by a certain stressful event. Now tell me who in their life does not have stressful events. There may be more people with OCD than we ever thought. But what's so disturbing to you that all these people claim they have OCD? In a way your question is totally redundant. Who cares if they claim they have OCD. Also it's not that many. Maybe you heard it from a selected group. Do a survey in your neighborhood ask them what "OCD" is. I bet most people won't even know what it is.
