Bipolar medications without sexual side effects?

Question:
I was taking Depakote for bipolar disorder and something else for my OCD. Do you know of another drug that is great for bipolar disorder that does not have the sexual side effects that Depakote does? I am a 24 year old woman, who is happily married and I dont want these pills ruining my personal life with my husband.

Answers:
As I'm sure you know, every med has different effects with everyone.Your best bet would be to talk with your psychiatrist and be honest with him.

Other Answers:
what exactly is a sexual side effect? We've all heard it in the ads, but it is marketing gobbly-****. What does it mean in your case? You just aren't in the mood?

Well, I am a 30 yo woman who's dealt with this illness for over 15 years. I am currently on Lexapro, which seems to work well, but UNFORTUNATELY there are NO psych meds that have NO side effects on your sexual appetite. They all interfere with your Dopamine & Seratonin & hormone levels, which in turn, effect your sexual appetite. I've been on TONS of psych meds & all of them had some kind of effect, but the newer meds seem to be better, with less side effects overall. I'm not sure if you see a psychiatrist or therapist, but if so, talk to them seriously about your concerns, they will listen (hopefully)! Depakote, Lithium, Paxil & those kinds of meds will effect your sex drive even more. Talk to your Dr. about Lexapro, Buspar, Wellbutrin. They may be a better alternative for you. There are professional journals that talk about these meds, look em up.
