can you tell me about tegretol?

Question:
Hi - I just started tegretol and am at 600 mg in the morning and 600 in the evening. The side effects I'm feeling are just completely bonkers. I feel dizzy, sleepy, and just pretty darn out of it. Like I can't remember what I'm supposed to be doing half the time. Has anyone else felt these symptoms and do they go away?

Answers:
OMG why are you on such a HIGH dose?

I ONLY take 100mg daily that's it!

I use Tegritol for my Bi-Polar/Manic Depression. Mood Stabilizer.

PLUS 40 mg Prozac Daily 90 mg Prozac Weekly and Seroquel 25mg nightly.

When I was put on Tegritol it was 100mg 3 times a day.

Talk about being in LA LA LAND! Fuzzy Wuzzy was ME!

Takes a good 4-6 weeks for the tiredness to lessen.

Call your doctor up and tell them what symptoms you are experiencing. Talk to the nurse. See if you can start with a lower dose then build up if you have to.

When I first took Tegretol I had the same problem. It was a long time ago and I can't remember how long, but I think a week and I was back to normal and the dizzy, sleepy, disorientated business went away.

That dosage is a really very high one for just starting. It would be wise to contact your doctor and question the reason for such a high dose. Tegretol is used for several different things so there may be a good reason, but usually a smaller dose is started and then increased after you get use to the lower dose. It is always better to double check.

I don't know much about it, but I believe my mom had an allergic reaction to it that caused her to have high blood pressure and recurring symptoms of manic depression (the disease it was prescribed for). It took everyone a while to realize what the problem was, but she's since been put on other meds and is doing fine. I don't know what your problem could be, though. Tell your doctor about it. As far as I can tell, people's reactions to drugs for mental illness vary a lot, and they take some experimentation to get the right type of drug and the right dose. Good luck! I have been taking Tegretol-XR (extended release) for nine years. I also take 600 mg b.i.d. I don't recall having any adverse reactions to it when I started taking it, but I was on chemotherapy at the time, so I had other things on my mind. These symptoms will likely subside as your body adjusts to the medication. Watch out for toxicity. I have experienced Tegretol toxicity, which, for me, causes symptoms of drunkenness, such as being so off-balance/dizzy that I have to hold on to something to keep from falling down,as well as nausea & vomiting and blurred vision. Be sure to have your level checked regularly to pinpoint what a good, effective level is for you. Good luck.

I take 800 mg a day in divided doses; I can take less because I take other drugs that strengthen the Tegretol or make it more efficient in my system.

The side effects you feel now are usually temporary and will go away after a few weeks on the therapy. One hint I have is to take tegretol with food or milk; this is less likely to make your stomach upset and can set the Tegretol to react more slowly into your system.

Further, every quarter or every six months, you should be asking your physician to do Tegretol level and general liver and kidney function tests to ensure that: (a) you are at therapeutic level; and (b) you are not suffering from side effects such that you should not be taking the drug.
