Why is Sertraline marketed in Canada and not in the USA (Zoloft is its common brand name)?

Question:
One of two possibilities: 1. Zoloft is more profitable for its manufacturer to be sold in the US, since we do not have socialized medicine. 2: The FDA has not yet approved its usage in the USA.

Answers:
Wrong on both counts. Zoloft has been approved by the FDA - I don't understand your statement.

Zoloft is under patent, and that patent is about to run out (if it hasn't already - the patent was to expire sometime this summer), so it will be marketed generically soon. That's the way it works with all drugs. They are under patent for a certain amount of time, then they go generic. The drug companies have no control over that. Patent law is patent law.

The downside of that is that when a drug such as Zoloft goes generic, you can't get free samples of it any longer. I get free samples from my doc, he hands them out like candy to me. But he told me that when it goes generic, the free ride will be over.

Other Answers:
I'll go with #1 with a little twist-the drug manufacturers here don't WANT to market a generic as it will cut into their already huge profits.
cause the #1 reason bought up the #2 reason so they both can win. lol
